The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, agreed to take joint actions in connection with the plane crash in Iran that cost the lives of 176 people.
The leaders held their third telephone conversation to discuss the accident of the Ukraine International Airlines plane in Iran on January 8, after Tehran admitted to accidentally knocking it down with a missile.
The Prime Minister of Canada thanked the President of Ukraine for his efforts to ensure access to the site of the tragedy by Canadian experts.
Trudeau requested Zelensky’s assistance in a dialogue with the Iranian authorities to identify the bodies of the deceased, including Canadian citizens.
Francois Phillipe Champagne, Canada’s foreign minister, reported that consular officials were already in contact with Iranian authorities to provide assistance to the families of the victims.
Meanwhile, Zelensky reiterated his willingness to provide logistical assistance to return to Canada the remains of his deceased citizens after the necessary formal procedures in Iran are completed.
Zelensky and Trudeau look forward to the constructive work of the coordination and response group led by the foreign ministers of countries whose citizens have died in the accident.
The group will meet on January 16 in London.
In this context, the parties emphasized the importance of developing an algorithm to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Canada expressed their hope for greater cooperation and exchange of information on the investigation of the disaster, particularly in the interaction with Iran.
The Iranian government has faced massive protests after it was announced that the Armed Forces of that country accidentally shot down the Ukrainian aircraft.
