Turkey and Russia Near an Agreement to Supply 36 Su-35 Fighter Jets

According to the Turkish newspaper “Daily Sabah” citing sources from Ankara, Turkey is about to reach an agreement with Moscow on the purchase of Su-35 fighter jets and the co-production of some Russian-made aircraft components.

Turkish and Russian officials are discussing the details of the sale of a total of 36 Su-35 fighter jets to Turkey, two months after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to the MAKS 2019 international aviation fair in Zhukovsky.

The sources added that officials are also discussing Turkey’s possible involvement in the production of some components of fighter jets, including its precision weapons and ammunition.

During the visit to MAKS on August 27, 2019, Erdogan was shown the new generation of Russian stealth aircraft, the Su-57 fighter plane, the Su-35 fighter plane, the Ka-52 military helicopter and the helicopter. Mi-38 transport.

Shortly after Erdogan’s visit, Sergei Chemezov, head of the Russian manufacturer Rostec, declared that he would be willing to sell air superiority fighters from Russia to Turkey if Ankara “expressed desire.”

Turkey has disagreed with the United States over its agreement with Russia on the S-400 air defense missile systems.

The United States eliminated Turkey, a NATO member, from its fifth-generation F-35 JSF combat program in response to Ankara’s purchase of the Russian missile system.

Turkey will no longer be able to put the 100 F-35 online, which it had decided to buy, and from which it had received the first two copies, now held in the US based on Luke’s air force.

We also remember that Turkey had shown interest in 20 copies of the F-35B to equip the LHD Anadolu, the future amphibious assault ship of the Turkish Navy.

NATO and other US allies use the fifth-generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter stealth fighter aircraft, the most advanced aircraft in the US arsenal Washington said the use of the S-400 with the F-35 would allow Russia to get too much information internal on the stealth system, radar and avionics of airplanes.

“The F-35 cannot coexist with a Russian intelligence gathering platform that will be used to learn about its advanced capabilities,” the White House said in a statement released at the beginning of the crisis with Turkey.

Washington had long declared that the acquisition of the S-400 could have led to the expulsion of Turkey from the F-35 JSF program.

To complete the information, we also mentioned that Turkey produces more than 900 parts of the F-35 and that the supply chain will soon move from Turkish factories to Americans or associates.

Turkey was a Level 3 partner in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program to which it initially contributed $ 195 million and is, or was, part of the supply chain. There are eight Turkish companies participating in the F-35 program, including the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) that produce and assemble the central fuselages, lining and arm doors.

The TAI is strategically manufacturing 45% of the F-35s, including the pylons for air-to-ground armament.

To this is added that Turkey, also through TAI, had obtained approval to build the F135 engines for its own aircraft and had been selected to have the ability to review and deposit European F135 engines.

Both the production and the revision of the engine should have been carried out in the first Eskisehir HIBM and TAI had always been responsible for managing the organic deposits of the Turkish F-35 within the autonomous global logistic support system (ALIS).

According to Reuters, the United States is still arguing with Turkey to remove Ankara from the purchased Russian S-400 missile defense system and return it to the supplier or not put it into operation, a senior State Department official confirmed.

The issue is part of broader conversations with Ankara to resolve current problems with Washington, the official said, and the risk of sanctions under a law known as the Law of Accountants of Adversaries through US Sanctions (CATSAA).
