The Category 5 hurricane made landfall at noon on the Elbow Cay of the Abaco Islands.
The powerful hurricane ‘Dorian‘ hit the north of the Bahamas with torrential rains and winds close to 300 kilometers per hour, a hurricane of an unprecedented power in the history of this archipelago located between Florida, Cuba and Haiti.
The category 5 hurricane, described as “catastrophic” by the American National Hurricane Center, made landfall at noon on the Elbow Cay of the Abaco Islands, in the northwest of the Bahamas, an archipelago consisting of 700 islands, islets and keys.
“We face a hurricane as we had never seen in the history of the Bahamas,” said Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, who broke down in tears at the press conference. “It is probably the saddest day of my life” he added.
After the Bahamas, the hurricane is expected to approach the east coast of Florida on Monday night and Tuesday, but it is difficult to predict how hard it will hit that state after its change of trajectory.
“It is moving and it is very difficult to predict,” President Donald Trump had summed up in a tweet on Saturday.
“Initially I had to hit Florida directly,” but now it seemed to be heading to Georgia and South Carolina, he said, adding that the ‘Dorian’ path could change again. Trump canceled the trip he had to make to Poland this weekend.
Although Miami was probably saved from the storm, its residents remained cautious and authorities continued to distribute sandbags to combat flooding in the city.
Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis urged people to “stay alert.”
