During 2019, there was one plane crash for every 884,000 flights, which represented an improvement in air safety compared to the average of the previous five years, reported the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In 2018, the accident rate was one every 733,000 flights, while between 2014 and 2018, the rate was one accident for every 640,000 flights, IATA said.
In total, there were 53 plane crashes throughout 2019, of which eight were fatal , leaving a total of 240 victims.
“Based on this information, on average, a passenger could take a daily flight for 535 years before he was involved in an accident with a fatality on board. But we know that an accident is a lot. Every fatality is a tragedy and it is vital that we learn the right lessons to make aviation a safer industry,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA Director General.
In addition, a person would have to travel daily for 29,586 years before being involved in an accident with a 100% death rate, IATA said.
Globally, there were four regions that did not present a single jet plane crash during 2019: Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa.
On the other hand, there were four other regions worldwide that did not present a single plane crash of turboprop aircraft: Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, North America and North Asia.
