NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who offered statements at the end of the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting in Brussels, said that all allies agree that the alliance is indispensable for common security.
“We are stronger together despite all our differences. NATO Foreign Ministers made important decisions about adapting the alliance. We have agreed to include space as a new operating environment along with air, land, sea and cyber space,” said Stoltenberg.
“Space is part of our daily and military life. It can be used for peaceful purposes, but also aggressively. Satellites can be attacked. And these attacks can bring down communication services,” he added.
The head of NATO stressed that space is also essential for the deterrence and defense of the Alliance from navigation to intelligence and missile detection.
“NATO is an alliance based on defense. We have no intention of putting weapons in space,” he said.
The secretary general of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said the ministers also discussed the fight against terrorism and approved an action plan that aims to improve the role of NATO in the fight against terrorism.
He said that the Allies also decided to increase the exchange of intelligence about terrorist activities and foreign warriors.
Referring to the fact that foreign ministers addressed the role of the alliance in energy security, Stoltenberg announced that in this context they decided to intensify efforts to increase situational awareness and better understand risks and protect basic infrastructure.
