Lightning struck 323 reindeer that lived in a national park in Norway.
The incident was recorded and published on a YouTube channel, becoming viral in a few days.
A park ranger found 323 dead reindeer after being struck by lightning.
The event happened on the Hardangervidda plateau, a national park where more than 10,000 reindeer live in freedom.
The images that were shown on television, exposed the lifeless body of animals grouped in a limited space.
“Animals are grouped up when there is bad weather and they were struck by lightning,” an official from the Norwegian Environment Directorate, Kjartan Knutsen, told AFP.
“It’s something unusual. We’ve never seen anything similar on such a large scale before,” he added.
The reindeer is a species of artiodactyl mammal of the Cervidae family whose original habitat is the taiga and the tundra. Arctic reindeer have a vision that extends beyond the visible spectrum, to the near ultraviolet.
The eye of the reindeer manages to see up to wavelengths of 350-320 nanometers, without, apparently, this capacity affects them, compared to the human eye that is capable of perceiving wavelengths between 700 nanometers (corresponding to red ) and the 400 nanometers (corresponding to the violet).
