A ship rescued three people this Thursday after their small plane fell into the sea near the Bahamas, according to the Coast Guard.
Authorities characterized fishermen on the ship as “good Samaritan” for picking up survivors of the plane crash about 20 miles east of Bimini.
The people, who were unharmed, were transferred to Cat Cay in the Bahamas.
Delvin Major, chief investigator of the Bahamas Air Accident Investigation Department, said the fixed-wing multi-engine aircraft had left Great Harbor Cay in the Bahamas and was heading to Miami, Florida.
The “N-40702” aircraft is a 1973 Piper PA-34-200 and is registered with 5 J Aviation Services LLC, based in Miami-Dade, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records.
A Coast Guard spokesman said authorities sent “five assets,” including a helicopter and an auxiliary plane to the place where it was reported that the plane was sighted. The fishing team arrived first.
The Bahamas Air Accident Investigation Department is the principal investigator. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will assist in the investigation.
