The asteroid 162082 (1998 HL1) approached our planet this October 25 at a speed of about 40,500 kilometers per hour and was at its closest point to Earth around 17:21 GMT.
The celestial object, with a diameter between 440 and 1,000 meters, passed a distance of 6.21 million kilometers (just over 16 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon) and, although it is included in the asteroid category “potentially dangerous” of NASA, did not represent any threat.
A video of his approach was published by the Virtual Telescope Project, an online observatory founded by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Ceccano, Italy.
The asteroid, of the Apollo type, was discovered on April 18, 1998. In total, more than 5,000 asteroids of this group are known.
According to NASA’s definitions , objects that are larger than 140 meters in diameter and approach less than 7.48 million kilometers to Earth can be classified as “potentially dangerous.”
