The rover is scheduled to be launched in July 2020, and the ship is expected to land in the Jezero de Mars crater in February 2021.
The rover, which weighs more than 1,000 kilograms, will look for signs of past microbial life, characterize the climate and geology of the planet, collect samples for a future return to Earth and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.
“As we prepare to launch this historic mission to Mars, we want everyone to share this exploration trip, ” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Missions Directorate (SMD) in Washington.
“It’s an exciting time for NASA, as we embark on this journey to answer deep questions about our neighbouring planet, and even the origins of life itself.”
