Lufthansa made an offer to acquire a part of the insolvent Italian air carrier Alitalia, which is also the 5th largest airline in Europe. The plan provides for the creation of a new company NewAlitalia with stable economic prospects.
According to local media, Lufthansa wants to offer 500 million EUR for partial acquisition of the Italian airline. The plan also provides for the reduction of about 6,000 jobs and a complete rejection of short and medium flights.
Lufthansa’s chief Carsten Spohr draws attention to the fact that interest is shown to Alitalia in a new format, but not to the company as a whole in its current state.
After filing in the spring of the bankruptcy petition, the management of Alitalia is in active search of a potential buyer. If this does not happen within 2 years, the company will be liquidated.
Alitalia is the flag carrier of Italy. The company has its head office in Fiumicino, Rome, Italy. Its main hub is Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Rome, and a secondary is Linate Airport, Milan. Other focus airports are Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Milan-Malpensa Airport, Palermo Airport and Naples Airport.
